APPROACH

EXPERTISE

My Approach to Psychotherapy

What is Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Therapy? How does it work?

In my psychotherapy sessions for adults, I base my practice on the psychoanalytic approach, with a particular focus on object relations and relational psychoanalysis theories. In line with psychoanalytic theory, my aim is to support individuals in making sense of how their past experiences influence their present lives. I place great importance on enhancing my professional knowledge and skills by keeping up with current literature in the field of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and participating in supervision.

The psychoanalytic approach adopts a process-oriented perspective and does not impose a specific time limit. Healing is seen as a journey that varies from person to person and is often not a short one. Analytic therapy does not offer ready-made solutions, universal answers, or formulas about what is good or right. It does not aim to eliminate symptoms but rather views these symptoms as merely the visible part of a larger whole and focuses on understanding the broader, individual-specific picture behind them. In doing so, it aims to achieve more lasting and sustainable healing. This process requires long-term effort and commitment from both the individual and the therapist.
The psychoanalytic perspective recognizes the individual's past as a significant factor in making sense of their life; however, contrary to popular belief, this approach is not limited to merely excavating and exposing the past. The goal is not to uncover traumatic memories but to understand the impact these memories have had on the individual and the unexpressed emotions of that time. In this way, a safe space is created where these emotions can be articulated and these experiences can be processed. In this process, the therapist and the individual work together to explore the connections between the past and the present. Memories are just one of the many tools used in this journey. Alongside the relationship that develops between the therapist and the individual and the dynamics within that relationship, the individual's daily problems, dreams, challenges in relationships, and other thoughts also form the subject of therapy and play a crucial role in understanding the individual.
